Happy Neurodiversity Celebration Week!
Neurodiversity refers to…well, everyone! It refers to the wide range of minds that exist in our world, and the different ways we feel, think, operate, live, and so on. While many may place an emphasis on neurodivergent individuals and communities this week, it’s important to note that neurodiversity encompasses both neurotypical and neurodivergent folks. Neurodiversity is a testament to how there is no “one” or “normal” way of living and functioning.
In the last year or so, I have been putting in more time to enhance my understanding of neurodiversity. Before I took more of an active stance in my learning, my only understanding of neurodiversity was autistic individuals and people with ADHD. Little did I know, AuDHDers fall under the neurodivergent umbrella, and that well… I was unaware of a world of neurotypes! I had no idea that OCD, PTSD, synesthesia, schizophrenia, dyslexia, and many others fall under the neurodivergent umbrella, and that neurodiversity also included being neurotypical.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week highlights the opportunity to reflect on the ways people are socially allowed to operate within neuronormative constructs, and the challenges people who diverge from these constructs face. It encourages us to think about the ways people within different intersections (culture, sexuality, gender, ability) face life.
This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, I am especially thinking about the different ways people live, navigate struggles, see success, choose to celebrate, engage in rest, think, and interact with the world.
If you want to find out more about neurodiversity, Neurodiversity Celebration Week is hosting a range of online events about the different ways neurodiversity exists in our world!
